Advances in Magnetohydrodynamics (AIM) at the IAS

AIM brings together researchers interested in the forefront of magnetohydrodynamics, with a focus on fluid scales. We are kinetic-curious, while keeping fluid dynamics at the heart of the meeting.

What we do

  • Foundational theory talks, including informal blackboard presentations
  • Talks and discussions on new numerical methods
  • Interesting unpublished results and work in progress
  • Collaborative problem-solving sessions — bring a problem to the group
  • Journal clubs on fluid dynamics and astrophysical plasmas
  • Coding tools, development environments, and scientific workflows
  • Discussions led by local researchers working on MHD

Meetings are primarily in person. Occasional invited Zoom talks are welcome for special sessions, rather than as the regular format.

Overview
Our first meeting is a chance to get to know one another and help shape AIM. Everyone is invited to introduce themselves and share one plot from their work or an area they find interesting.
Preparation
Bring one plot to introduce your research or a question you would like to discuss.
Discussion questions
  • Who are you, and what do you work on?
  • What does your plot show?
  • What would you like to see in future AIM meetings?
Notes
Notes will be added after the meeting.

Location
Rubenstein Room 1, IAS
Overview
Standard shock-capturing schemes limit the reconstruction everywhere, before knowing whether limiting is needed, and pay for robustness with dissipation in smooth flow. This talk presents an a-posteriori alternative implemented in AthenaK, following the MOOD (Multi-dimensional Optimal Order Detection) approach. The method covers Newtonian and relativistic hydrodynamics and MHD, with the fallback applied consistently to fluxes and electric fields so that constrained transport preserves ∇·B = 0.
